LENT: Lent is a Season of the Church year that invites us to spend time preparing ourselves for the joy of Easter. We do this in several ways. We take time in prayer and fasting to open our spirits to Christ's presence among us. Lent also invites us to reflect on our sinfulness and be open to God's forgiveness. The Mass vestments are Purple to remind us that Lent is a Penitential Season.
ASH WEDNESDAY: Lent begins with Ash Wednesday.Ashes will be distributed during a 12 Noon Mass, at 6:30 P.M.and during an Ecumenical Service at 8:00 P.M. All will beheld in Cook Chapel. The signing of ashes on our foreheadsis a reminder to us that Lent is a journey of repentance andrenewal. Ash Wednesday is Feb. 6th.
FASTING: FASTING: Fasting means eating less at mealtimes (our twolesser meals combined should not exceed our main meal)and not eating between meals. Those who are 21 to 59 yearsold are asked to Fast. The two days of Fast are: AshWednesday and Good Friday.
ABSTINENCE: Abstinence means refraining from meat. Those who are 14 years and older are asked to abstain frommeat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fast and Abstinence do not have to be seen as anegative. They can be a reminder for us to be one with thepoor of our country and our world.
SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION):The Season of Lent is a good time to be open to God'sforgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Ourregular times are: Wednesday and Sunday from 5 P.M. to6 P.M. in the Osborne Newman Center, or anytime by appointment. Consider celebrating the Sacrament ofReconciliation during this Season of Lent
